Dian Mandala

Our stingray leather is processed from rays caught off coast of Java. The skin has a marvelous appearance and sturdy durability because the microscopic fibres of the stingray leather are woven together, unlike ordinary cow hide, which has parallel fibres. Until now, attempts at tanning stingray leather failed to consider the fibre structure of marine leather, and the result was a stiff, fragile product. Dian Mandala has been tanned using a newly developed process that work with the non parallel structure of the skin fibres, to yield a strong, soft skin of exquisite texture and beauty. Unlike most exotic leather, ours is made from a species of stingray that is neither endangered nor threatened. We use the Cawtail ray (Trygon sephen) and the Spotted stingray (Trygon kuhlii) which are caught by traditional fisherman, and previously discarded.
